You cannot empower others they can only do that themselves. People can be empowered by positive thinking and positive actions. The greatness that they create is through the positive environment that they make for themselves.

Apart from the oblivious answers (ie ‘taking responsibility’), to have people understand is like trying to unravel barbed wire while wearing boxing gloves.

There are large swathes of the population who not only cannot see their relationships with the rest of society and so not understand what you would be asking them to do, but have no interest in doing so – beyond the blinkered selfishness they seem to be locked into.

Sorry if my answer seems to be so negative. It’s the way I see it / them at the moment.

One method and the most important method of empowering any individual is through education. Firstly, the person has to be knowledgeable about who he is and what he wants for himself. Until the person knows these things then he has nothing to work towards. Education can be both formal and informal . Once thes individuals are equipped with the necessary tools, they can take greater controll of there lives and thus,they are empowered.

That all depends what you mean by "empower". One who has to harm another for no reason while doing so is very weak and immature. How do you propose to figure out the difference between who is truly lacking and those who abuse it?

A few things help:

1. Do not try to help them change. That’s like helping a chick out of its egg, or a flower out of its bud – you do more damage than good.

2. Stop doing things for them that you are doing – stop enabling. This forces them to do these things for themselves.

3. Get yourself some space from the person – you may be far too entangled in the relationship, You need to detach in love.

4. Encourage them – "You can do it." but no advice. they must learn to walk on their own.

5. Be willign to sit back and watch them fall down a few times. When they do you CANNOT help – it’s like watching a person learn to ride a bike, use a skateboard, or snow ski. They will fall down – that’s part of the elarning process.

The beginning step is guiding them towards positive thinking. People who think positively usually have more personal strength. You know you can't force them, still, you can give them hints along the way; they pick up on it fine; they don't that's fine, too.

Trying to help individuals gain control, or remain focus on certain priorities, are unique to each individual. For the following reasons:

* Some people were never taught how to prioritize their budget:

* Some people never could get organized on anything they set their minds to:

* And some are by nature very lacadaisical about everything.

Helping people to develop a sence of urgency or priority, for certain things they consider important, is the first step in that direction.
